Approximately 25,000 residences in south-east Queensland were left lacking electricity on Monday's dawn after severe thunderstorms impacted the region, bringing powerful gusts hitting over 100 km/h.

Massive Hailstones and Extensive Damage

Homeowners reported large ice chunks reaching sizes of 7cm in certain regions. The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed that different parts across the state had been hit with substantial ice precipitation.

Response teams were working to restore energy supply throughout the affected regions, with dozens of response units activated to manage the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victoria's Climate Difficulties

Simultaneously, around 1,000 energy customers in the southern state also faced electricity disruptions after the metropolitan area experienced its wettest day in over 500 days.

Rescue organizations handled nearly 600 calls for help across the region, mainly for building damage but also for fallen timber and water accumulation.

• Hoppers Crossing suburb - multiple assistance requests
• Wyndham area - 179 calls for assistance

At one point on the previous day, more than twenty-eight thousand electricity consumers in the state were without power.

Climate Outlook

Moist weather were predicted to continue along significant areas of Queensland's east this next several days as a low-pressure trough continued to pull in damp air against the shoreline.

The following day was forecast to be the wettest day, with persistent storm activity expected across different parts of both regions.

Medical Alert

Health officials cautioned that there was an higher risk of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the northern rural areas, specifically given the ongoing climate situation.

This warning comes after past events where analogous circumstances led to substantial respiratory problems in the region.
