Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing such medications need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors believe the way of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something activating and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle management.
